Oblong quarto with pictorial wraps (bust of grinning dark faced minstrel smoking a pipe with red and black lettering. Includes photo illustration of Alley and his son. Black and local Tennessee humor done with cartoons, each showing a caricature African American man speaking in heavy dialect. Racist and completely politically incorrect but of considerable historical interest . Introduction reads: The Negro of the South lives close to the soil and retains his racial originaliy - his superstitions, his quaint idiosyncrasies of thought and action. Such a Negro is Hambone, chosen by Mr. J. P. Alley as the original of his delightful cartoons. He is a clearcut type of the old time darky, unspoiled by the equality ideas of the younger generation about him. Near Fine, just some even toning of cover.
