On front fore-edge--the closed page ends-- (about one inch high by 6 inches long) there is an ORIGINAL full-color PAINTING showing a green field with fence and sheep and a man with a black hat fornicating (a soldier? a bishop?) with a mostly clothed maiden on top of a drum. THE PICTURE IS TOTALLY INVISIBLE until one slightly fans or bends the text block - then the image suddenly appears. The painting itself is Fine and of high quality with surprisingly fine detail. Book itself is Very Near Fine, one half-inch closed tear on front blank end paper and a small spot on end paper from glue residue. No owner marks. Text is clean and bright as new. Hardcover with unusual fully embroidered cover using metallic thread. Book measures 11-1/2 x 8-1/4 inches; 29.5 x 21 cm. no date c. 1650. In Latin 54 pages, (two leaves are blank), fully manuscript with rouged fore-edges. Full page original drawing of radiant chalice done in yellow, tan end gray inks. Very high quality drawing. Text is in black and grey ink with red capitals and some lines of writing in red ink also. Internally book is VG with light wear. Cover is only Fairly Good with embroidery faded to various shades of faintly purple grey on front panel. Rear panel has much gilt tone remaining in the embroidery thread with an area of pale blue surround with the word PAX in gilt. A few tiny gilt sequins are sewn in the decoration also. The embrodery is worn but still mostly intact. Cloth is tearing along spine. Rare. (a85942)

No date but appears to be 18th century. Book is 5-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches, 331p., rich black leather with floral and twisted bands of gilt on both front and rear boards. 4 raised spine bands and full gilt floral decoration on spine. Original delicate color floral end paper. All edges gilt. Text very neatly written in black ink with headings in red ink. Owner name (and likely writer of mss text in the book) is written on front blank but is a bit too decorative to read but something like Johannes Truntzel. His town is also given but also hard to decifer. Lovely item. Good plus, some light cover wear, end papers unevenly browned. Text largely clean and binding is very secure. Nice sample of bookbinder's art and of religious devotion as book feels to have been often used for praying. (a87085)

Copy No. 21 of 50 exemplaires de tete sur Japon avec Trois etats des Eaux-fortes et une Aquarelle inedite d'Assire avec une suite of 50 rouge monochrome des Aquarelles inedites d'Assire. Book is 11x9x1-1/2 inches (28x22.5x4 cm). 84 pages of text (In French). The 20 Eaux-fortes and the awesome original color watercolour frontis are by Gustave Assire (1870-1941). Mounted on the front cover panel is one of the actual sheets of engrvaed copper used to make one of the 20 copperplate illustrations in the book. There are 3 consecutive printings of each of the 20 illustrations. All illustrations are on rectos only. The copperplates are playful and erotic and very finely drawn. **The book is one of the most beautiful books we've seen. Rene Kieffer was one of the world's great book binders. Fine, with only one very minor small rubbed spot on rear leather. No ownership marks. (a87218)
