Tokyo 1921 Shiseki Meisho Tennen Kinenbutsu Kankokai. 2 volumes. Large 4to., alternate pages have numerous reproductions of photo illustrations taken by Masamori Makita of seemingly every corner of Japan, each of which is accompanied by a full pages of text in Japanese. Attractive and unusual bright chartreuse decorated boards with deep purple silk tips and spines edges. Purple silk stringbound. Two volumes are held in khaki green cloth folding case with two ivory clasps and mounted paper labels. Volumes are VG, in Fairly Good folding case. Folding case has wear and tear on hinges and corners. Valuable and extensive look at pre- World War II Japan. (a41929)

Japan. PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF JAPAN WITH 47 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS
c. 1880-1910. no photographer given. Album has 36 photos, 9 x 7-1/2 inches, delicately hand-colored; 3 monotone photos 4x3 inches and 8 monotone photos 4-3/4 x 6 3/4 inches. Most of the large photos have a printed label on lower edge of view identifying the locale of the photo. Photographs are of Nikko, Chuzenji, Ashio, Omama, Yokohama. Several unidentified photos are of Japanese women in native costume. The boards are foxed. The photos are quite interesting but all are a bit faded and toned giving them an air of mystery. Foxing in margins. Hard to date. Album itself has silk-covered boards with backstrip and tips leather. Album is 14-1/2 x 11 inches. Album cover is only Fairly Good with leather rubbed, worn and chipped. Binding inside is very secure and no tears or chips on photos or boards. (a87353)

Hibiki Shashinkan. SOUVENIR DU NAGASAKI - A SENTIMENTAL NIGHT IN JAPAN (1927)
Nagasaki 1927 first edition thus Hibiki Shashinkan (Photo Studio). Large luscious photograph album of Nagasaki (album measures 9x12 inches ; 24x31 cm.) Text is dated 1926 but initial section (of 7 pages) appears to be a souvenir of a specific event in 1927 which was then bound onto the photograph album. Album is Hardcover covered with tan velvet with inchlong side flaps. Front board panel has image of a schooner in gilt on a leather rectangle mounted in the middle. Silver lettering. Rear panel has embossed name "Hibiki". The 1927 souvenir begins with a page with a mounted original photograph of an unidentified group of Japanese and 4 Westerners. Appears to have been a group interested in botany, possibly gardening, as names of several plants, Agro-Hort Society and the name Robert Fortune appear in the Japanese text which follows. The photo is followed by a titlepage "A Sentimental Night in Japan Apr 1927" in English and Japanese and then 5 pages of text in Japanese printed on rectos only. Then follows 114 page Souvenir of Nagasake - the first page is a color painting, then 113 pages of Hibiki's very beautiful artistic photographs of Nagasaki , some foldout, several tipped in, all with tissue guards. All photos identified in English and in Japanese. Text and Photos are Fine. Cover is VG with no tearing but some fading and rubbing on velvet and one 1/4 inch chip in velvet on middle of rear panel. All hinges secure and uncracked. No ownership marks. RARE. (One copy is in the British Museum which apparently has a different introductory souvenir bound in.) Pictures gladly provided upon request. c. 1880. 10 heavy stock cards (10 x 14-1/2 inches) each with one large original photograph on one side 8-1/2 x 10-1/2 inches and 4 smaller photos mounted on verso , smaller photos are 4 x6 inches. (one card has a large photo on both sides.) These are not the usual tourist photos and appear to have been taken by a traveller. All photos professionally and neated mounted. Images strong. Only 7 views are identified (all titles are in the images) Kiyomizudera, Nanjengi, Arasiyama, Buddha in Nara, Maruyama, Qchiai Sekimon in Hodsu-Gawa, Karasaklin Aumi. Many of the views show Buddhist statuary. Good, some foxing and toning on mattes in margins. Eighteen photos show humans. Total of 47 photos - appear to all be of Japan .
