(Japanese matchbook cover collection) . TWO ALBUMS OF MOUNTED ORIGINAL COLOR MATCHBOOK COVERS MADE IN JAPAN
Two albums, each 9-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches . Each album has colorful pictorial label 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches mounted on front panel. This title label states : "Match Goshi & Co., Osaka, Japan" on one and "Made in Japan" on second album. Tiny red ink date stamp 1944 on covers (may be an acquisition date though. Matchbook artwork appears to include artwork from 1920s and 1930s.) No other ownership marks at all. Thin accordion-fold rice paper album leaves hold match box covers very neatly and carefully tipped in. Silk ribbon bindings. Covers are very pretty, very colorful. Some reproduce Japanese woodblock prints, others animals, folk characters, English slogans, Japanese words, historical portraits, etc. Labels are 2 inches x one inch in size. 380 labels in volume 1; 120 labels in volume 2. Artwork is very delicate and very beautiful. Album pages are lightly foxed throughout; labels are all VG to Fine. Album covers are stained and somewhat worn but binding is secure and pages are not torn. Unique and strangely compelling. Fine example of Japanese design aesthetic. (a87093)
