(smoot-hawley) . TARIFF BILL OF 1929 COMPARATIVE PRINT OF H. R. 2667 (AS PASSED BY THE HOUSE) AND THE TARIFF ACT OF 1922
Washington 1929 GPO. 71st Congress, 1st Session. House Documents Vol. 5, Document No. 23. This is the original version of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act as passed by the House in May 1929, and sent to the Senate. Printed here and contrasted with the Tariff Act of 1922. Although subject to many amendments before being passed by the Senate and signed into law by Herbert Hoover in 1930 over the objection of the nation's leading economists, its passage by the House in 1929 immediately resulted in retaliatory actions by America's trade partners and is viewed as a critical step toward the Stock Market crash of October 1929. This Act, with its protectionist measures surviving largely intact in its final version, is often described as the event that precipitated the Great Depresssion. From the Library of the House of Representatives (Lib. H. of R. printed at heel of spine), a significant addition to any serious collection of economic history. Hardcover. Octavo, 359pp., original printed buckram. Near Fine, light soiling. Scarce. (a75257)
