Smith, Reverend Alexander. ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT RECORD BOOK
c. 1880. Notebook with paper covered boards and leather spine. Record book of Rev. Smith, a Presbyterian Minister living in Paterson, New Jersey. Much on history of Presbyterians in Paterson; the longest section is a lengthy list of the 1278 books in his library; a short autobiography; recipes for sasparilla, cures for croup, lock jaw etc., facts about history and current world situation, detailed notes on some books he read, long list of Paterson marriages and more. Entry dates extend from 1867 to July 1901. Rev. Smith mentions that he was born in Derry, Ireland, August 22 1831; that he was ordained in 1866; took over as Pastor of Presbyterian Church in Paterson in late 1877. Rev. Smith's information on the Paterson Church and his appointment is confirmed in the book: History of Bergen and Passaic Counties, New Jersey by William Nelson (see pp. 494-498). Octavo, 104pp. (a few pages are blank). Good, writing quite legible, spine is mostly cracked through and boards are quite worn, becoming disbound. Still much interesting information - especially the library list and view into the mind, interests and concerns of a 19th century American minister. (a77961)

Dennis, Helen Eliza (later Mrs. Oscar Ross Ewing) . COLLECTION OF FOUR FULLY MANUSCRIPT VOLUMES OF JOURNALS OF TRAVEL IN ENGLAND, FRANCE, ITALY 1907-1908 PLUS SEVERAL ORIGINAL SHORT STORIES AND LISTS OF BOOKS READ - WITH - A FIFTH VOLUME "BOOKS I HAVE READ" 1898-1904 (5 separate volumes)
Helen E. Dennis was born c. 1895. Her Father was Director of the Pennsylvania Lines West of Pittsburgh. They lived in Morristown, New Jersey , and were clearly very well-off financially. The collection here is dated 1898 to 1908. (Helen will later marry Oscar Ross Ewing - 1913 Harvard graduate , chairman of Democratic National Convention and important figure in Truman's administration - on November 4, 1915. Their names appear in the 1920 New York Social Register.) The four octavo volumes of travel journal entries begin April 9, 1907 with Dennis on board the SS Kaiser Wilhelm II and ends in May 1908 as she travels through England, France and Italy- but almost all the diary entries are made in Italy. The fourth of these travel journals also has several short stories or "dreams" as she calls them , written by Dennis , each around 7 pages in length, as well as several pages dedicated to listing books she has read. There is also a fifth volume titled in gilt "Books I have Read." Helen is an excellent writer, very descriptive, emotional, intelligent. Entry for July 10,1907, begins: "Another day dawned sunshine & splendor! Our hearts were happy and our laughter gay as we sped along the road to Azay-le-Rideau. The distance was swallowed in a few gulps by our powerful machine & and before we realized that we had started we came into sight of the entrance to the Chateau. What is more entracing than a dazzling white castle seen thro the vista of green trees? " She describes a woman , Mrs. Clark, of whom she is clearly not fond , who comes to visit her while Helen is staying in Italy. Helen spends eight pages of the diary describing her morning with this lady - how she was dressed ("She was dressed in a cloth suit the color of which seemed to express her character, why I can't explain. It was not a decided red nor a pink, but a sugary shade of very ripe strawberries over which cream had been poured.") She recounts word-for-word long portions of their conversation, and offers a lengthy analysis of why she doesn't care for Mrs. Clark : "Mentally I scourged myself as i looked after her. She did jar on my personality intensely, but i was judging her by the effect she had on me instead of seeing the good in her. The woman had a perception of the beautiful, a graphic manner of expresing it which few possess." (May 1908) Helen writes well - she uses a narrative style with much diagolue between her, her family and people they met while travelling. The fifth volume in the collection neatly lists hundreds of books Helen read, including the date and place when/where she read each title. She clearly travelled a lot. She read many books in Morristown, of course, but also in Atlantic City New Jersey, Santa Barbara California, Ceylon, Egypt, Korea, Japan, and so on. All 5 volumes are leather bound and are in VG or better condition. No hinges cracked; some wear and chipping on two of the backstrips. All bindings secure. Travel volumes are 142p, 184p, 175p, 249p. The "Books I have Read" volume is 108p. Volumes are roughly the same size but all different in style and covers. All very neatly written in original ink handwriting. Lot of 5 volumes: (a90656)

Payne, Grace (and William C Kennard). MANUSCRIPT LETTER COLLECTION (254 letters)
254 letters (plus a few postcards and telegrams) written 1911-1917 by Grace Payne to her future husband William C. Kennard. (There is one letter written by William to Grace.) Grace and William, both residents of Flatbush, Brooklyn, met in high school and fell deeply in love--a love sustained for 7 long years before they married (or were scheduled to wed-the letters end about 6 weeks before the proposed June 1917 wedding date.) During the 7 years engagement, Grace took classes at Chautaugua, New York, while Will went to Colgate University. He travelled a lot in 1915 receiving Grace's letters in Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Pasaden, Riverside California, Chicago and Canada. He then joined Company "B" 7th NY Infantry of US Field Army in the spring of 1916 moving briefly to McAllen, Texas, and returning in December of 1916 while Grace lived in Brooklyn and at Buck Hill Falls Inn in Pennsylvania. The 1917 letters find Kennard mostly in New York City and Montclair, New Jersey, with a few letters finding him in Chicago and Canada. In 1917 he apparently founded Stewart & Sparry, a New Jersey Textile Company. The letters give a vivid glimpse into the life of a young middle class girl before the first World War. The number and frequency of the letters gives the reader the feeling of reading a diary. Almost all letters are in their original envelopes with cancels and postage stamps. All are in Good condition with some wear on envelopes, contents neatly written and easily legible. The collection: (ny507)
