Kotzebue, an agent of Czar Alexander I, was assassinated in 1819 by a student, resulting in the suppression of German student organizations and the reactionary Decrees of Carlsbad. This book was immediately suppressed by the Prussian government and arrest of Gorres was ordered. Gorres apparently escaped to Switzerland.
