Contents of collection include: original Printed Lease with manuscript entries of land in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, ownered by George Miller leased to Long Island Rail Road August and September 1901 with original stamped envelope; mss letter from law offices of Hinsdale and Sprague dated Jan 3, 1890 to Nathaniel Miller about LIRR land rights; a letter to Nathaniel Miller of Brookhaven from the Long Island Railroad dated Oct 6, 1881 about using his land; several manuscript formal legal petitions for redress from LIRR due to damages of a LIRR fire in April 1866; two NY Supreme court documents from 1871 concerning a case of Henry G Freeman aagainst the LIRRmore. Papers are signed by C E Topping, Nathaniel Miller, John P Mills and others. Many items but not all relate to Miller Family of Brookhaven. Single page letters on various size papers. Letters dated April 1854 to April 1855 . Written by Hawkins from Jamesport, Loang Island and other places. Names mentioned in letters include George Davis, George Hawkins, Jaohn Darling, G M Smith. Several schooners are mentioned: Charles T Smyth, John G White and Autumn. Simeon S Hawkins was born in Stony Brook, Long Island, New York March 30, 1827. He was Captain of the schooner "Chas. D Hallock" in 1847 when only 20 years old. A staunch Republican, he was elected to the NY State Assembly on the Republican ticket in 1883. He was elected NY State Sentator in 1888. He served as Town Supervisor for one term. Hon. Mr. Hawkins was one of the the organizers of the Riverhead Savings Band and also served as a Deacon in the Congregational Church. VG. all letters legible. (a103291)
